Inventory financing lets a retailer, wholesaler or distributor buy stock before it sells, with the inventory usually pledged as collateral and recorded in a UCC filing. Driftland Advances, a small-business funding broker in Conway, Arkansas, explains how it is structured and repaid and presents Faulkner County requests to lending partners, who make the decision and set the terms.

How inventory financing works
A partner advances money to buy specific goods, often paying the supplier directly. The goods become collateral. The business repays either in fixed installments or as the financed items sell, depending on the structure. Partners usually lend against a portion of the inventory's value rather than all of it, because stock that does not sell is worth less if the partner ever has to recover it. Fast-moving, easily resold goods support a request better than specialty items that sit for months.
Collateral and the UCC filing
Most inventory financing comes with a UCC-1 financing statement filed with the Arkansas Secretary of State. The filing tells other creditors that the partner has a claim on the described inventory, and sometimes on proceeds from its sale. Two practical consequences follow. First, if another lender already holds a blanket lien on all business assets, the new partner may need that lender's agreement before it will finance the stock. Second, the filing stays on record until it is terminated, so ask for a termination once the balance is paid off.
Floor plan financing, briefly
Floor plan financing is a type of inventory financing for high-value items sold one at a time, such as vehicles, boats, trailers or large equipment. The partner pays the manufacturer for each unit, the dealer pays off that unit's balance when it sells, and the partner checks stock levels with periodic audits. It is common among dealers and rare for general retail, but the term turns up often enough in searches to be worth knowing.
Stock money three ways: inventory financing, a line or working capital
| Option | How it is tied to the stock | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory financing | Secured by the specific goods bought | Large, predictable purchases of goods that resell easily |
| Line of credit | General limit; may be secured by inventory and receivables together | Smaller restocking orders that repeat through the year |
| Working capital | Lump sum, not tied to particular goods | A one-time gap that is not only about stock |
Inventory financing is also different from factoring. Factoring advances money against invoices you have already issued; inventory financing advances money against goods you have not sold yet. A wholesaler may use both at different points in the same cycle.

Retail trade was the county's largest sector by count in 2023, with 418 employer establishments, 6,545 paid employees and about $217.2 million in annual payroll (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023). Only 38.0 percent of those retailers had fewer than five employees, a smaller share than the 54.7 percent across all county employers. Wholesale trade added 107 establishments. In ZIP 72032, which includes the office address, retail led every sector with 261 establishments (ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023).
Those numbers describe a sector where buying stock ahead of sales is routine. Our note on stocking a new shop covers the opening-order question, and the sector pages explain how other businesses here use short-term funding.
What lending partners usually review
- An inventory list or aging report, with cost and expected selling price
- Supplier invoices or the purchase order for the new stock
- Sales history showing how quickly goods turn over
- Business bank statements and credit history
- Any existing liens on inventory or on all business assets
Each partner has its own standards and its own view of which goods it will lend against. The four steps show how a request moves, and the Faulkner County picture puts the retail figures in context. Compare every option on the comparison page.
